Our Family Emergency Plan
Follow instructions from local emergency officials. Review this plan every six months.
After you print it
- Put one copy with your emergency kit and one where the whole household can see it.
- Walk to both meeting places together once, so everyone knows exactly where they are.
- Make sure children know the out-of-town contact’s number, or carry it on a card.
- Check your local government’s emergency page for hazards specific to your area.
Common questions
How do I create a family emergency plan?
Write down who is in your household and their needs, list emergency and out-of-town contacts, choose a meeting place near home and one farther away, note where your emergency kit and utility shutoffs are, add plans for children, care needs and pets, and decide how you will receive official alerts. Then share the plan and practise it.
What is an out-of-town contact for?
When local phone lines are busy, it can be easier to reach someone in another area. Each family member checks in with the same person, who passes messages along.
How often should a family emergency plan be reviewed?
We suggest reviewing it at least every six months and whenever something changes, such as a new phone number, school, medication or pet.
Does this tool save my plan?
No. It runs only in your browser and nothing is stored or sent. Print or save the page as a PDF before closing it.
